| What is medical tourism? |
Medical tourism, also called health tourism, is an increasingly popular new trend combining health and tourism in recent years.
Based on the definition given by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), medical tourism refers to traveling to another country to obtain healthcare services after you have caught a disease.
These include minor healthcare services like dental treatment and cosmetology or intensive healthcare services like tumor treatment and heart bypass surgery.
Health tourism refers to traveling to another country to obtain preventive healthcare services before you have any disease, such as health checkup, health preservation and spa.
In the past, only wealthy people could afford to receive excellent medical services in advanced countries. Nowadays, the trend has changed because of country-specific and global economic factors, such as the rise of expensive medical fees, unstable exchange rates, etc. As a result, medical tourism combining overseas vacation and premium healthcare at affordable prices is in high demand.
